T-Bones Fall 8-7 in Championship Series Opener

The Kansas City T-Bones (0-1) lost game one of the best-of-five Northern League Championship Series, 8-7, to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (1-0) Tuesday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

The RedHawks scored three runs in the first and held the lead for the entire contest. Mike Coles hit an infield single to start the game before Mike Rocco (1-1) issued walks to the next two batters, Nic Jackson and Eric Campbell. Coles and Jackson scored on a two-RBI single by Jesse Hoorelbeke, and an RBI single by Jay Cox plated Hoorelbeke. Fargo added another run in the second with a solo home run by Jackson, extending the lead to 4-0.

After two perfect innings, Scott Fogelson (2-0) allowed an RBI single to Keanon Simon to put Kansas City on the board in the third, but the RedHawks answered in the fourth with an RBI single by Coles, bringing the score to 5-1 and chasing Rocco in favor of Todd Moser.

Rocco allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits and three walks over three and one-thirds innings in the loss, striking out six.

The T-Bones plated two runs in the fourth with RBI doubles from Jim Fasano and Rico Washington. Fargo again matched the effort in the next half inning, scoring two runs with the help of a wild pitch and an error to regain the four-run lead. Gabriel Martinez then doubled to begin Kansas City’s half of the sixth and scored on a two-run home run by Ray Sadler, cutting Fargo’s lead to 7-5.

Fogelson left after six innings, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks and striking out six.

After throwing a perfect sixth for the T-Bones, Ryan Knippschild surrendered a double to Hoorelbeke to start the seventh. An RBI single by Cota two batters later plated Hoorelbeke, extending the RedHawks lead to 8-5. Casey Hoorelbeke walked Martinez to start the bottom of the eighth before surrendering a single by Sadler. An RBI single by Dwayne White scored Martinez before an RBI groundout by Washington plated Sadler, capping the scoring at 8-7.

Matt Perisho threw a perfect ninth for Kansas City. Martinez singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to put the tying run on base, but Donnie Smith struck out Sadler to finish the game and earn his second save of the postseason with one and two-thirds scoreless innings of work.

The T-Bones and RedHawks continue the best-of-five 2010 Northern League Championship Series on Wednesday night as Kansas City sends Reid Santos (0-1, 4.50) opposite Jake Laber (1-0, 3.52) and the RedHawks.
