08/31/2010 10:40 AM -

The Northern League has announced that Kansas City T-Bones first baseman Gabriel Martinez has been named Player of the Week for the week ending August 29.

Martinez, who was signed by the T-Bones on August 24, batted .423 (11-for-26) with two doubles, six home runs, and 13 RBI in six games played during the week. He also scored a league-high 11 runs in that span. Since he joined Kansas City, the T-Bones have won six straight games and scored 57 runs. He had back-to-back games with two home runs and hit five round-trippers over three consecutive games.

The 6-2, 215-pound first baseman was signed by the Kansas City T-Bones on the final day allowed to make roster moves in the 2010 Northern League season. A nine-year veteran, he brings a career .286 batting average to the T-Bones. Over his career, he has also played second base, shortstop, third base, and the outfield.

The 27-year-old, left-handed hitter was originally drafted by Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 27th round of the 2001 amateur draft. He played seven seasons in the Rays farm system before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009. He played as high as Class AA for both organizations. A native of Sabana Grande, PR, Martinez joins the T-Bones after winning the 2010 Mexican League championship with Saltillo.

This is the third straight week a T-Bones player has been selected as Player of the Week, and Kansas City’s league-leading 10th selection overall in 2010.
