Glen Dominant in Series-Opening Win Over KC

08/23/2010 9:25 PM -

The Gary SouthShore RailCats (47-40) used seven strong innings from Willie Glen (10-2) and three home runs to defeat the Kansas City T-Bones (48-38), 7-2, Monday night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

In front of 3,891 fans, both starters threw three innings of scoreless ball before each team scored in the fourth. The RailCats struck first, plating three runs on a home run by Jeff Beachum off Ryan Knippschild (9-7). Dwayne White hit a double off Glen to start Kansas City’s half of the frame and moved to third on a groundout before a throwing error allowed him to score with two outs, bringing the score to 3-1.

That was the only blemish for Glen, who moved into a tie with T-Bones pitcher Cody McAllister for the league lead in wins at 10. The right-hander allowed just one unearned run on three hits while striking out seven in the victory.

A solo home run in the sixth by Randall Simon gave Gary a three-run cushion, and the RailCats extended their lead to 7-1 in the seventh with an RBI single by Mike Massaro and a two-run home run by Jay Pecci.

Knippschild surrendered seven runs on nine hits and one walk over seven innings, striking out six in the loss.

Casey Hodges threw a scoreless eighth for Kansas City, and newcomer Mike Rocco added a scoreless ninth before the T-Bones created a threat against Aaron Cook in their half of the ninth. Rico Washington walked with one out, and a single by Brian Joynt pushed him to third. An RBI infield single by Jimmy Mojica plated Washington and capped the scoring at 7-2. Cook walked the next batter before inducing a bases-loaded double play to end the game.

Kansas City sends right-hander Andrew Cruse (9-5, 2.83) to the mound opposite lefty Brad Halsey (6-6, 3.86) and the RailCats Tuesday night in game two of the three-game set. First pitch is set for 7:05. Catch all the action online at www.tbonesbaseball.com or on the radio at KXTR 1660 AM.
