Joliet Takes Game, Series with Extra-Inning Win

08/22/2010 5:21 PM -

An RBI single by Jonathan Wyatt in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Joliet JackHammers (44-42) a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones (48-37) Sunday afternoon at Silver Cross Field.

Drew Shetrone (1-1) took over for Kansas City to begin the 10th inning with the score tied at three. After a leadoff walk by Chris Colton, Roberto Mena reached on a bunt single for the JackHammers. Joe Billick then struck out on a foul bunt before a wild pitch pushed the runners to second and third. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Wyatt followed with the game-winning single.

Jacob Blackwood drove in the first run of the game with a solo home run against Todd Privett in the first inning. The blast was Blackwood’s league-leading 29th home run of the season, putting him one away from tying the single-season franchise record for home runs in season, set by Eddie Pearson during the 2004 campaign.

Joliet tied the game at one against Cody McAllister in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Wyatt. Kansas City took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run by Keanon Simon in the fifth, and Privett left after throwing a scoreless sixth inning. The JackHammers pushed ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, chasing McAllister with a game-tying sacrifice fly by Kevin Rios. Steven Stewart entered and surrendered an RBI single to Brad Correll to cap the frame.

McAllister allowed three runs on six hits while walking six over five and two-thirds innings. Privett surrendered two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out seven over six frames. Neither starter factored into the decision.

Stewart picked off Correll to end the sixth and added three more scoreless innings of relief for Kansas City. The T-Bones picked up their final run of the contest on a solo home run by Jimmy Mojica off Wes Alsup in the top of the seventh.

Prior to the game, the two teams switched relievers in a trade that sent Erik Hamren to Joliet for Mike Rocco. Hamren appeared in ninth for the JackHammers, surrendering one hit while walking one and striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.

Griffin Bailey (4-4) threw one and one-thirds scoreless innings to earn the victory for Joliet.

Kansas City heads home for a short three-game series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats beginning Monday night. The T-Bones send left-hander Ryan Knippschild (9-6, 5.00) to face right-hander Willie Glen (9-2, 2.75) and Gary in game one. First pitch is set for 7:05.
