Hernandez Homers Twice, Drives in Six in Win Over Goldeyes

08/07/2010 9:03 PM -

Emporia State product Keith Hernandez connected for two home runs while driving in six for the Kansas City T-Bones (42-28) in a 9-6 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (37-35) Saturday night at Canwest Park.

Hernandez drove in the first two runs of the contest with a two-out, two-run home run against Chris Salamida (9-5) in the second inning.  Hernandez picked up his third RBI two innings later with a bases-loaded groundout before a six-run fifth chased Salamida and pushed Kansas City ahead, 9-0.  Ray Sadler drove in the first three runs of the frame with his 12th home run of the season before Hernandez capped off the scoring with a three-run shot, his second of the game.

Salamida left with one out in the frame and was charged with seven runs, five earned, on eight hits over four and one-thirds innings in the loss.

Winnipeg began to rally in the sixth, scoring four times on four hits against Cody McAllister (9-4).  The T-Bones right-hander posted five shutout frames, retiring the side twice in that span, before an RBI single by Luis Alen put the Goldeyes on the board for the first time.  After an RBI single from Vince Harrison two batters later, Dee Brown finished the scoring in the inning with a two-run shot, his fifth of the year.

McAllister surrendered a two-run home run to Kevin West with one out in the seventh to cap the scoring at 9-6.  McAllister left after a strikeout to the next hitter, giving way to Drew Graham who threw one and one-thirds scoreless innings of relief.

McAllister allowed six runs on 11 hits over his six and two-thirds innings to earn his career-high ninth victory of the season.

Drew Shetrone entered for the T-Bones in the bottom of the ninth and got two quick outs before loading the bases on a single and two walks.  Shetrone then induced a foul popout to first baseman Jim Fasano to secure his second save for Kansas City.

Hernandez finished two-for-five in the contest.

The two teams prepare for the rubber match of their three-game set tomorrow afternoon as Kansas City sends Ryan Knippschild (7-5, 4.83) to face Stephen Flake (3-3, 3.91) and the Goldeyes.  First pitch is set for 1:30.  Catch all the action online at www.tbonesbaseball.com or on the radio at KXTR 1660 AM.
