06/03/2004 3:52 PM - The St. Paul Saints used their 21 hits to score 10 runs, and that was enough to beat the Kansas City T-Bones 10-7 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City, KS, in front of 4,518.

St. Paul jumped on top, 2-0, behind an RBI single from Nick Gretz and a Chas Terni groundout. Gretz had three base hits in the first four innings, driving in four runs with two doubles and a single, and finished the night 3 for 5.

The T-Bones scored three in the second for their only lead of the night, but it wouldn’t be enough. Starter Ralph McCasland (0-2) left the game in the third, working just 2 1/3 innings while allowing eight hits and four runs. McCasland gave way to southpaw reliever Clint Marcus, who allowed four earned runs in his 1 1/3 innings of work, and the T-Bones trailed 8-3 after 3 ½ innings.

On defense, the T-Bones were red hot, however. Phil Thompson earned three outfield assists and Hiroshi Fujimoto gunned out two runners trying to swipe second base.

Kansas City chipped away at the lead, however, scoring two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-6. But St. Paul scored an insurance run in the seventh to make it 9-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, however, Eddie Pearson smacked a one-out single for the T-Bones. Ray Brown singled Pearson to third, and Pearson scored on a wild pitch. Jack Jones then singled Brown to third and stole second, giving the T-Bones the tying run on second with one out. But Chad Shindle struck out and Hiroshi Fujimoto grounded out to end the threat. St. Paul added one in the ninth for the final margin.

Chris Chavez earned his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Mike Meyer (2-1) picks up his second win of the season for St. Paul, working 5 IP while allowing 5 R (4 ER) on 9 H, with 3 K. McCasland (0-2) gets the loss for the T-Bones, his second.
