T-Bones Service Club Challenge a Success

06/03/2010 2:03 PM -

Local chapters of Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions and Sertoma clubs gathered at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on Tuesday, June 1, for the third-annual T-Bones Service Club Challenge.  The challenge was to determine which group could collect the greatest amount of food for Harvesters, a food bank in Kansas City.

"Service clubs have contributed so much to local communities all across the globe, but it does not come without those pertinent words: service, and commitment,” said Adam Ehlert, T-Bones Vice President and four-year Rotarian.  “I feel very fortunate that my grandfather, Melvin Ehlert is a terrific example to me of both words.  As of next month, he will have 53 years of perfect attendance at his Sauk Centre (MN) Lions Club.  Committing to collect canned goods at a baseball game is one thing; doing it for decades is another."

The food was collected in designated bins by the front gate, and Harvesters then measured the amounts by weight. More than 2,700 pounds of food was collected.

Kiwanis was announced as the winning club in the T-Bones 8-3 win over the Lake County Fielders, collecting a whopping 2,016 pounds of food.
