Blackwood Earns Player of the Week Honors

05/31/2010 10:43 AM -

The Northern League has announced that Kansas City T-Bones second baseman Jacob Blackwood has been named Player of the Week for the period ending May 30, 2010.

Blackwood, who leads the league with 12 RBI and is tied for the league lead with four home runs, batted .357 (15-for-42) with eight runs scored, five doubles, and a stolen base over the first 10 games of the season. He did the bulk of his damage over a seven game span from May 21-27 when he batted .500 (13-for-26) with five doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.

The 6-0, 210-pounder is playing his fifth season of professional baseball and second with the T-Bones. He first signed with Kansas City on June 25, 2009 and has already matched his home run output from 63 games played last year. With the T-Bones in 2009, he batted .288 with four home runs and 38 RBI. Changing positions this season with Kansas City, he has started every game at second base despite having played over 300 of his previous 373 games at third base.

Blackwood was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 16th round of the 2006 amateur draft and played parts of four seasons in their organization (he was also drafted in the 40th round of the 2005 draft by the New York Mets, but did not sign). The 24-year-old right-hander batted .300 in his first professional season with Jamestown of the New York-Penn League and played collegiately at Maple Woods Community College in Kansas City, MO.

Fargo-Moorhead pitcher Scott Fogelson was named Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 in his first two starts with the RedHawks.  He has yet to allow a run in his first 14 innings of the season while holding opponents to a .128 average.

Kansas City welcomes the expansion Lake County Fielders to CommunityAmerica Ballpark with a three-game series beginning tonight.  Kansas City will send left-hander Brett Davis to the mound for his first start of the season opposite right-hander Garry Bakker for the Fielders.  First pitch is set for 7:05.  Come out to the park for a special post-game Memorial Day fireworks show, as well as the first Kids Eat FREE night of the season.  For tickets, call 913-328-5618 or visit www.tbonesbaseball.com
