Hernandez Drives in Three as T-Bones Stay Hot

05/26/2010 9:56 PM -

After a 64-minute rain delay at the start of the game, the Kansas City T-Bones (5-1) secured their second straight series victory to begin the 2010 season as they defeated the Schaumburg Flyers (1-5), 6-5, tonight at Alexian Field.

The Flyers took the first lead of the contest against Kansas City starter Dewon Brazelton (1-0) in the first inning on an RBI triple by Chris Schultz.  Todd Moser (0-2), a member of the T-Bones 2008 Northern League Championship squad, retired the first eight batters he faced before Jimmy Mojica reached on an error with two out in the third.  After stealing second, Mojica scored on a single by Keanon Simon to tie the game at one.  Jacob Blackwood then doubled home Simon for a 2-1 Kansas City lead.

Keith Hernandez (pictured) pushed the T-Bones lead to 4-1 with a two-run double in the fourth inning.  After an RBI single by Rico Washington in the fifth, Moser left in favor of Josh Giles who retired the next two batters to end the frame.

Moser suffered the loss after allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits in four-plus innings.

Brazelton was charged with an unearned run in the fifth when Brandon Newton singled to left and advanced to second on a throwing error by left fielder Brian Joynt.  Following a wild pitch, Newton came home on an RBI groundout by Lyndon Poole to bring the score to 5-2.

Brazelton earned his first win as a T-Bone after surrendering two runs, one earned, on four hits in five innings of work.

Schaumburg picked up two runs against reliever Kevin Light in the sixth on an RBI double by Joe Nowicki and sacrifice fly from Richard Mercado to pull within one.  Hernandez drove in another run for Kansas City with a single in the eighth to make the score 6-4.  The Flyers capped off the scoring when Nowicki doubled and later scored on a fielder’s choice against Kansas City reliever Erik Hamren.

Justin James threw a perfect ninth, striking out two of the three batters he faced to earn his second save of the season.
