Kevin West homered three times for the Winnipeg Goldeyes (32-23), but a walkoff home run by Cody Ehlers made the difference as the Kansas City T-Bones (26-31) fell 10-8 at Canwest Park tonight in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

The Goldeyes scored first with a three-run first inning against Luis Villarreal, using back-to-back home runs from Juan Diaz and Kevin West to take a 3-0 lead.  Diaz plated Josh Asanovich with his blast after the Goldeyes’ second baseman doubled with one out.

An RBI fielder’s choice from Dee Brown plated Winnipeg’s fourth run in the third and West’s second home run of the game, a solo shot in the fifth, pushed the Goldeyes ahead by five.  Villarreal left after six innings having allowed five runs on eight hits over six innings.  He did not factor into the decision.

Justin James relieved Villarreal and allowed two walks and a single before giving way to Chris Rhoads with the bases loaded and nobody out.  A double play from Brown scored the first run before an RBI single by Ehlers made the score 7-0 after seven.

Bear Bay held Kansas City to just four hits over seven scoreless innings before surrendering consecutive singles to begin the eighth.  The right-hander left in favor of Chris Homer after the second basehit.  Homer allowed a single to his first batter, Aharon Eggleston, to load the bases before Damian Rolls plated the T-Bones first run with a sacrifice fly.  After a strikeout, Homer gave way to Jordan Stewart with one out and runners on the corners.

Following a walk to Craig Hurba (pictured), Stewart surrendered a two-run single to Jim Fasano that brought Kansas City within four, 7-3.  The next batter, Ryan Fox, plated two more with a double before a popout by Neb Brown ended the inning with the score at 7-5. 

Bay was charged with two runs on six hits over seven-plus innings in a no-decision.

Stewart remained in the game for the ninth and surrendered singles to the first two batters.  After Aharon Eggleston failed to get a bunt down, pushing the count to 0-2, Zach Baldwin entered for Stewart.  Eggleston singled to center, plating Jacob Blackwood to bring the tying run to the plate.  Matt Davis entered for Baldwin and induced a fielder’s choice from Rolls before an RBI single by Greg Jacobs tied the game at seven.  Hurba followed with an RBI single of his own for an 8-7 Kansas City advantage.

Nate Cotton entered to close the game for the T-Bones and surrendered a one-out home run to West, his third of the game.  After an infield single by Brown with two outs, Ehlers finished the game with a two-run home run that capped the score at 10-8.

West finished three-for-three with three solo home runs, two walks, three RBI and five runs scored.  Ehlers went three-for-five with a home run and three RBI.  Cotton allowed three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in the loss.  Davis took the victory for Winnipeg.

Game two of the three-game series is set for tomorrow night as the T-Bones oppose Mark Michael (0-2, 4.50).  Kansas City has yet to name their starter.  First pitch is set for 7:00.
