Kansas City Takes Game Two from JackHammers, 3-2

07/18/2009 10:06 PM -

The Kansas City T-Bones (26-29) won the second game of a three-game series against the Joliet JackHammers (22-35), 3-2, tonight in front of 7,603 fans at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

After two quiet innings, Mark Minicozzi began the T-Bones half of the third inning with a single off Nate Sevier.  He moved to second on a single by Aharon Eggleston and went to third on an infield single by Damian Rolls.  A sacrifice fly by Greg Jacobs plated Minicozzi for the first run of the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Craig Hurba reached on a throwing error by Andrew Pinckney.  He moved to second on a single by Jim Fasano and was pushed to third when Ryan Fox reached on another error by Pinckney.  Hurba scored on the JackHammers’ third error of the inning, a misplayed groundball by Danny Cox, to extend the T-Bones lead to two.

Dustin Bolton (pictured) threw six and one-thirds shutout innings for the T-Bones, but did not factor into the decision.  He allowed five hits and just one walk, while striking out two before giving way to Payton Tweddale with a runner on second.  Tweddale retired both batters he faced to end the inning and preserve Kansas City’s two-run lead.

Bolton extend his current scoreless innings streak to 14 with his outing tonight, giving him the longest such streak by a T-Bone this season.  Sevier left after four innings, surrendering one run on four hits in a no-decision.

Daniel Sattler (2-3) took the mound for the T-Bones in the eighth and struck out Cox and Phil Avlas to start the frame, but Avlas reached when Hurba threw wild to first after strike three bounced away from the T-Bones catcher.  He moved to second on a groundout and went to third on a single by Kevin Rios.  A two-run double by Brad Correll plated both Avlas and Rios, tying the game at two.

Damian Rolls began the bottom of the eighth with a triple off Chad Blackwell (1-3), who was starting his fourth inning in relief of Sevier.  Jacob’s second sacrifice fly of the night scored Rolls, giving Kansas City a 3-2 advantage and capping the scoring on the night.

Sattler earned the win after allowing two runs on two hits in one inning of work.  Blackwell took the loss with two runs, one earned, on three hits over his three-plus innings.  Nate Cotton threw a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the year.  Jacobs finished the night one-for-two with two sacrifice flies and two RBI.  Fasano and Rolls each collected two hits in the contest.

Kansas City will send Ryan Knippschild (3-2, 3.21) to the mound tomorrow night as they go for the series win over Rory Shortell (3-2, 3.50) and the JackHammers.  First pitch is set for 5:05.  Single-game tickets for the T-Bones start at just $6.  For more information, call 913-328-5618 or visit www.tbonesbaseball.com
