Former Royal Tony Cogan (4-5) allowed just four hits in a shutout effort for Gary (28-24) as the RailCats defeated the Kansas City T-Bones (25-26), 3-0, tonight at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind.

Ryan Knippschild (3-2) suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing three runs on six hits over seven and one-thirds innings of work.  The left-hander matched Cogan through six innings before Gary touched him for two runs on three hits in the seventh.  Before the seventh, Knippschild had surrendered just three hits over his first six frames.

After a strikeout by Cristian Guerrero started the seventh, three straight RailCats singled off Knippschild with Rob Marconi collecting the first RBI for Gary.  The next batter, Mike Massaro, pushed the score to 2-0 with an RBI groundout.

Knippschild left in favor of Justin James after a groundout and a walk to begin the eighth.  James surrendered an RBI double to his first batter, Jordan Czarniecki, for a 3-0 Gary advantage.  The RailCats loaded the bases against James, but a strikeout by Marconi ended the inning.

Following a single by Craig Hurba and fielder’s choice groundout by Jim Fasano to begin the second, Cogan retired the next 12 batters before surrendering a single to Jacob Blackwood with one out in the sixth.  Tonight marked the first career shutout for the former major leaguer and just his second career complete game.

Neb Brown finished one-for-three, snapping a five-game stretch in which he had posted multiple hits in each contest.  Fasano and Eggleston each finished 0-for-three to snap nine and eight game hit streaks respectively.

The two teams face off again tomorrow morning as Chris Rhoads (3-2, 4.86) takes the mound for Kansas City opposite Chris Jones (2-1, 3.14) and the RailCats.  First pitch is set for 11:00.
