Four-Run Ninth Downs Kansas City

07/09/2009 10:36 PM -

Nate Cotton (0-1) blew his first save with Kansas City, surrendering four runs in the ninth inning as the Kansas City T-Bones (22-24) fell 9-8 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (22-22) in front of 5,382 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

After issuing three straight walks with one out, Scott Fogelson surrendered a grand slam to Jim Fasano (pictured) in the first, giving the T-Bones an early 4-0 lead.  Damian Rolls and Greg Jacobs walked to begin the third, and an RBI single by Fasano pushed Kansas City’s lead to five.

Fogelson was replaced by Elvys Quezada after allowing five runs on five hits in three and one-third innings.  He did not factor into the decision.

With the help of a double play, Ryan Knippschild faced the minimum for three innings before walking Zach Penprase with one out in the fourth.  After a single from Nic Jackson pushed Penprase to third, a wild pitch plated the Fargo shortstop for the RedHawks first run.  The next batter, Jeremiah Piepkorn, homered to pull Fargo within two.

Piepkorn pushed the score to 5-4 with a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning.  Kansas City retaliated when Greg Jacobs hit a two-run double off Scott Koerber with one out in the bottom of the frame to push the T-Bones lead to three.  Jacobs’ double was his 77th as a T-Bone, the most in franchise history.  Jacobs scored on a base hit by Craig Hurba for an 8-4 lead.  Mike Coles reached on an error with one out in the eighth and came home on a single by Jackson to pull within three.

Knippschild surrendered five runs, four earned, on seven hits with nine strikeouts over eight innings of work.

The first four batters reached safely on three hits and a walk against Cotton to begin the ninth.  The first run scored on an RBI single by rookie catcher Jeff Stevens before a sacrifice fly from Coles pushed the score to 8-7.  The next hitter, Penprase, gave Fargo their only lead of the contest with a two-run double.

Matt Mossey (1-0) surrendered just one hit over two and one-thirds scoreless innings for Fargo to earn the victory.  Cotton was charged with four runs on four hits in the loss.

Fasano finished a triple short of the cycle, going three-for-five with five RBI to pace Kansas City.  His home run was his first since June 13.

Game two of the four-game series will feature Justin James (3-5, 6.75) for the T-Bones and Bill Weitzman (1-1, 4.94) for Fargo.  First pitch is set for 7:05 tomorrow night.  Tomorrow night is Elvis Night at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.  Wear your best Elvis attire and receive two-for-one KCI High-Fly Zone Bleacher Reserved tickets.  Small domestic draft beers are just $3 as well.  Single-game tickets for the T-Bones start at just $6.  Season tickets, group tickets, and mini-plans are available as well.  For more information, call 913-328-5618 or visit www.tbonesbaseball.com
