T-Bones Division Lead Falls to One Game with 5-1 Loss

08/25/2007 8:32 PM -

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – Dan Grybash allowed just one run on four hits over seven stellar innings for the Schaumburg Flyers as the Kansas City T-Bones fell 5-1 tonight at Alexian Field in Schaumburg, Ill.  A 5-0 victory by the Gary SouthShore RailCats over the Joliet JackHammers earlier in the night dropped the T-Bones division lead to just one game over the RailCats with eight games to play in the season.

Both starters held the opposition scoreless through the first two innings before Kansas City got their only run of the contest in the top of the third when Neb Brown (pictured) led off the frame with a double, then stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Alexander Derhak.

The Flyers responded against T-Bones starter Rick DeHart in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout from Anthony Monegan and an RBI triple from Mike Rohde, giving Schaumburg a 2-1 lead after three innings.

Grybash allowed just two more hits over the rest of his outing, both coming in the fifth inning.  Patrick Arlis doubled with one out but was later gunned down at home by left fielder Christian Snavely when Arlis tried to score the tying run on a single by Nelson Gord.  Grybash improved to 9-5 on the year while striking out 10 and walking none.  The right-hander struck out five of the last six batters he faced, including the final four consecutively.

DeHart surrendered two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles from Derhak and Jimmy Hurst.  He left after six innings, dropping to 2-3 after allowing four runs on seven hits in the contest.

Schaumburg plated their final run in the seventh inning against Raymond Jenkins on Hurst’s second RBI single of the contest.  Kenny Durost threw a scoreless eighth inning for Kansas City.

Game Notes:  Mario Delgado was ejected in the sixth inning following an inning-ending strikeout to Al Benjamin…Grybash and Jake Toohey combined to strike out five T-Bones in a row between the sixth and eighth innings.  Grybash (10), Toohey (1) and James Morrison (2) combined to strike out 13 Kansas City hitters on the night.  That is two less than the T-Bones season-high for strikeouts, set at 15 against Gary on August 15…The T-Bones are now 6-16 at Alexian Field since the start of last season and have been outscored 75-106 in that span.  They are 4-8 in Schaumburg this season…Calvin Pickering went 0-for-three with two strikeouts, failing to reach safely for just the second time in 20 games versus the Flyers this season…Tonight was Durost’s first relief outing since July 19, 2006 with Stockton of the California League.  He allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of work.
