T-Bones Take Pitcher’s Duel, 3-2

08/11/2007 9:26 PM -

FARGO, N.D. – A bloop single by Aharon Eggleston in the top of the ninth inning drove in the deciding run as the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-2 at Newman Outdoor Field tonight in Fargo, N.D.

Starting pitchers Anthony Boughner (pictured) for the T-Bones and Mark Michael for Fargo were stellar tonight as the offenses struggled to break through in the contest.

Fargo threatened first, putting a runner at third due to a two-out, three-base error by rookie right fielder Nick Jaros, but Boughner induced a flyout from Richard Austin to strand Tydus Meadows at third.

Each pitcher allowed just one hit through the first four innings before Kansas City finally broke through for two runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Eggleston and an RBI single from Geoff McCallum.  Michael left the game after seven innings, allowing two runs on just two hits while striking out seven and walking six.

Following a single from Billy Munoz in the second inning, Boughner retired 13 of 14 batters before the seventh inning.  In the seventh, the RedHawks capitalized on a leadoff walk from Meadows and a single from Austin, scoring their first run on a single to center from Munoz.  Austin tried to score from second but was gunned down at home by Eggleston.  With two outs, the next hitter, Adam Shorsher, blooped a single perfectly into center field, scoring Munoz who was running all the way from first base to knot the score at two.

Raymond Jenkins then entered for Boughner and got Dan Maycock to line out to McCallum at short on the first pitch, ending the inning.  Boughner allowed just two runs on four hits in six and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking two in the outing.  Neither he nor Michael factored into the decision.

Doug Young struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect top of the eighth and Danny Core struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the frame for Kansas City.  Young returned to the mound for the ninth, inducing a groundout from Calvin Pickering before the next three batters reached on a single, walk and an error by third baseman Ruben Salazar.  Nate Cotton entered and gave up the single to Eggleston, plating Neb Brown for the deciding run.

Matt Schweitzer allowed one hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth for the T-Bones, picking up his sixth save.  Core earned the victory, improving to 3-0.  Young took the loss, falling to 3-1.

Game Notes:  Rob Watson walked in the fourth inning, extending his on-base streak to 24 games…Pickering singled in the second, extending his on-base streak to 25 games…Eggleston’s ninth-inning single extended his on-base streak to 16 games and his hit streak to nine…Kansas City snapped a three-game skid, their longest losing streak since July 2-6…The T-Bones improved to 6-1 when tied after eight innings and are now 13-1 when their opponent scores three or less runs.  Fargo is now 5-4 when tied after eight and picked up just their fifth loss in 35 games when their opponent scores three or less runs.
