(August 20, 2022 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution were unable to bounce back from a loss the night before, dropping their second straight to the Long Island Ducks on Saturday night by a score of 8-5 at PeoplesBank Park.
Long Island mustered a two-out rally in the first, beginning with a walk from Alejandro De Aza. Two batters later, Carlos Castro got them on the board with an RBI single off the glove of shortstop Elmer Reyes who made a diving effort.
York didn’t wait long for an answer, plating two in the first thanks to a Telvin Nash RBI single to center and Yefri Perez beating out a double play ball to give the Revs a 2-1 lead.
The Ducks jumped back ahead in the second, scoring two of their own. The first came on an RBI groundout from Phil Caulfield. Another came on an RBI double from Tzu-Wei Lin who tried to score one batter later, on a base hit from De Aza but was gunned down at the plate by Melky Mesa. It was the 31st assist of Mesa’s Revs career, trailing Scott Grimes by just one for the all-time franchise record.
York created havoc on the bases in the bottom of the third inning. After Mesa had reached on a single, he attempted to go first to third on a Perez single. The throw from right fielder Dustin Woodcock skipped past third baseman Deibinson Romero, allowing Mesa to score and Perez to move to second. Perez attempted to steal third base with the throw from Castro sailing into left field, allowing him to score and make it a 4-3 York lead as the Ducks were charged with two throwing errors in the inning.
Disaster struck for the Revs in the fifth inning. A Castro single and RBI double from Jose Sermo chased starter Nick Travieso (6-6) from the game. On his way back to the dugout, Travieso verbally let his frustrations with home plate umpire Steve Zawisky be known, prompting an ejection.
Kyle Zurak entered and after a sacrifice bunt, gave up an RBI single to Matt Chamberlain via the experimental passed ball rule.
Another double from Lin scored two more and after a five-run frame it was suddenly 8-4, Ducks.
The Revs loaded the bases with one out in the seventh but came up empty on a flyout and strikeout to end the frame.
York managed to get one back in the eighth thanks to a JC Encarnacion single, scoring Josue Herrera who had led off the inning with a single and made it into scoring position on a passed ball. Despite that passed ball, Encarnacion used his bat to drive in the run, bringing York within 8-5.
York came up empty in the ninth despite a leadoff single from Nash (3-for-5) and will look to avoid a sweep on Sunday at 2 p.m. They will send left hander Austin Nicely to the mound for the series finale, opposed by Long Island righty Scott Harkin. Notes: The loss for Travieso snapped a four-decision winning streak, suffering his first loss since July 8. It snapped a streak of seven straight quality starts and was his first time going fewer than five innings since June 8. York’s bullpen finished the game with four scoreless innings with Carlos Ventura, Roniel Raudes, Doug Olcese, and Nick Green handling an inning apiece; the group combined to retire 11 straight at one point.
