(July 27, 2022 – York, Pa.): It was a night full of milestones for the York Revolution on Wednesday as three huge innings, six long balls, and another dominant start from Nick Travieso powered a 19-1 beatdown of the Charleston Dirty Birds at PeoplesBank Park. With the series even at a game apiece, the Revs will look to close the 12-game homestand with a second consecutive victory on Thursday night.
York trailed early as Travieso worked two clean innings to start the game before allowing a solo home run to Scott Burcham that just barely got out, hitting the top of the left center field wall and bouncing over for a 1-0 Dirty Birds lead in the top of the third.
The Revs tied the game on a bizarre play in the bottom of the third. With JC Encarnacion on first, Carlos Franco hit a ground ball to Burcham in the shift. After a diving stop, Burcham attempted to flip to second but overshot his second baseman. Encarnacion made his way to third as nobody was covering and came across to score as the throw missed pitcher Luis Cruz who had tried to race to cover third base.
The circus play was just the start as the Revs knocked in runs on three consecutive plate appearances later in the inning on an RBI single from Nellie Rodriguez, RBI double from Melky Mesa, and a sacrifice fly by Troy Stokes Jr.
Encarnacion added an RBI single of his own and Elmer Reyes followed with a three-run blast over the Arch Nemesis. His seventh home run of the year came on his 100th hit of the season, as he became the second player in the league to reach that mark this season. It punctuated a nine-run third inning as the Revs exploded in front, 9-1.
Travieso went 1-2-3 in the fourth with a strikeout to keep his night rolling, the strikeout being the 500th of his professional career.
York picked up right where they had left off to start the fourth inning as Rodriguez and Mesa hammered back-to-back home runs to make the game 11-1.
After Stokes Jr. followed with a single, York scored runs on each of the next three at-bats. Jhon Nunez plated Stokes Jr. with a double to right, which was followed by a Yefri Perez RBI bloop double to left and another RBI single from Encarnacion. Rodriguez closed out the scoring in the six-run fourth with an RBI single to left, ballooning the York lead to 15-1.
Travieso (5-5) continued to dominate and finished by stranding two in the sixth and working around a two-out single in the seventh, allowing just one earned run while striking out three to earn his third consecutive victory.
Mesa led off the bottom of the seventh by going yard for the second time on the night, this time on a shot crushed off the top of the carousel in left-center, bringing his York career total to 67 home runs which passed Andres Perez and moved him into sole possession of second all-time in franchise history. It was also the sixth multi-homer game of his Revs career, bringing him within one of Telvin Nash and Chris Nowak for the club lead.
That was not all for the power barrage, as after a Stokes Jr. walk, Nunez unloaded on his first York home run with a towering opposite field two-run shot to left, and Perez followed with a line shot to right field on the very next pitch. It was the season-high sixth home run for the Revs, and marked the fourth time in franchise history hitting at least six in one game.
Roniel Raudes closed the game down with two scoreless innings, finalizing the 19-1 win, the Revs’ third victory of the season by the exact same score.
The Revs will aim for the series win on Thursday as Jorge Martinez takes the mound for York. The game will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Throwback Thursday (Roaring 20s) and Guaranteed Win Night. Notes: The 19 runs tie a season-high for the York offense. The Revs’ six homers are one shy of a club single-game record and match a record for a home game; York had a pair of six-homer games at PeoplesBank Park during the 2019 season. Rodriguez’ homer was the 40th of his Revs career, tying Salvador Paniagua for 10th on the all-time list. Rodriguez is now 10-for-20 with four homers and 11 RBI over the last five games. Mesa is now 12-for-21 over his last five games. The third inning double was the 90th double of Mesa’s Revs career (third-most all-time). Perez has hit safely in seven straight and added to his career-high by cracking his sixth home run of the season. Travieso has allowed just two runs in 19.1 innings over his last three starts (all wins). Charleston committed six errors tying a Revs single-game record by an opponent (May 6, 2011 at Camden and August 21, 2014 at Camden).
