(June 18, 2022 – Staten Island, NY): Jorge Martinez struck out 10 as the York Revolution blew out the Staten Island FerryHawks, 10-1 on Saturday evening at Staten Island University Hospital Northwell Health Community Park. The Revs improve to 7-4 on their road trip with one game remaining, while manager Mark Mason moves ahead of former Bridgeport manager Willie Upshaw for fourth in Atlantic League history with his 573rd career victory.
JC Encarnacion got the scoring started with a first inning leadoff home run down the right field line on the third pitch of the game. Josue Herrera increased the lead to 2-0, lining a homer down the right field line to lead off the second.
Aside from the home runs, the story early on for the Revs offensively was missed opportunities as York stranded 10 runners through the first four innings. That changed in the fifth when the Revs batted around and scored six times to take a commanding lead.
The sixth and seventh walks of the night from starter Nick Carrell (0-2) ended his evening and set the wheels in motion for the big fifth inning. Lenin Rodriguez greeted reliever Joe Kuzia with a base hit to left to load the bases with no outs. Encarnacion (4-for-5) continued his huge night with a two-run single to left-center. Elmer Reyes brought home a run on a fielder’s choice. Connor Lien later did likewise, with the Revs also scoring runs on an error and a passed ball to go up 8-0.
York added two more in the sixth as Reyes lined an RBI single to right and Melky Mesa brought home one more with a ground ball.
Martinez dominated in six innings, yielding just three singles (two by designated hitter Stephen Alemais) and walking none while striking out 10. He retired 12 of his first 13 on the night and worked four separate 1-2-3 innings.
It was the second double-digit strikeout game of the season for Martinez, making him the sixth in Revs history to log multiple double digit strikeout games and the second in the league to do so this season. He also joins Ryan Baerlocher (2007) as the only pitchers in Revs history with multiple games of double-digit strikeouts and no walks, as Saturday marked just the seventh such single-game performance in franchise history.
Staten Island broke up the shutout bid with an unearned run on a sac fly by Antoine Duplantis in the bottom of the eighth.
Notes: York ties a franchise record for wins on a road trip with seven. The Revs extend a franchise record by homering in a 17th consecutive game, having now totaled 33 homers on that stretch and taking the league lead with 63 long balls on the season. Martinez has now struck out 25 while walking just two in 18.1 innings over his last three starts.
