REVS SURGE BACK LATE

(June 8, 2022 – Central Islip, NY):  The York Revolution stormed back with a four-run rally to tie the game in the eighth inning but fell on a walk-off double with two outs in the ninth, 6-5 to the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday night at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

The Ducks built an early commanding lead, scoring four times in the first inning as Sam Travis lined a two-run double down the right field line and Rusney Castillo lined a two-run homer to left-center to give the home team a quick jump.

Carlos Franco led off the second by drilling a solo homer to right-center, his 15th of the season and eighth in his last 10 games.

Long Island got that run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out by Vladimir Frias, staking a 5-1 lead that stood until the eighth.

Elmer Reyes sparked the eighth inning surge with a leadoff single to right-center, extending his hitting streak to nine games matching a personal season-best.  Melky Mesa worked a walk, and Franco smacked an RBI single through the left side against the infield shift to cut the deficit to 5-2.  Josue Herrera reached on an error with a run scoring on the play to bring York within 5-3, and Jack Kenley capped a great at-bat with a full-count line drive RBI double to deep left as York clawed to within 5-4.  After reliever Sandy Baez was replaced with fellow righty Nick Goody, Jhon Nunez drove a game-tying sac fly to center, as the Revs came all the way back to even the ledger at 5-5.  Connor Lien followed with a single to left putting runners at the corners, but after a caught stealing, Goody notched a strike out to escape the inning with the score still tied.

Frias legged out an attempted double play turn to keep the bottom of the ninth inning alive and scored from first on a two-out double to the alley in right-center off the bat of Alejandro De Aza, as the Ducks ultimately managed to escape with the victory despite the Revs’ late-inning push.

York’s bullpen was outstanding in providing an opportunity for the comeback to materialize.  After starter Nick Travieso, making his first start since May 21, went two innings in his return from injury, the Revs received two scoreless innings apiece from Jhoendri Herrera and Alberto Rodriguez, along with a scoreless seventh from Nick Howard.  Duke von Schamann kept the game tied with a scoreless eighth.  Robinson Parra (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing the two-out run in the ninth.

Ducks starter Akeel Morris limited the Revs to just one run in six innings, taking a no-decision.

Notes: Franco’s homer was the 41st of his Revs career, moving past Salvador Paniagua and tying James Shanks for eighth on the franchise’s all-time list.  With two RBI, Franco now has 20 runs batted in over his last 10 games.  He has also pulled back into a tie for the league lead in RBI with 46 on the season, a total that now stands just eight shy of the Revs franchise record for a first half.  The walk-off loss is the third suffered by the Revs on the season compared to one walk-off victory.  York lefty Austin Nicely faces Long Island’s Joe Iorio on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.  Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and the WOYK YouTube channel beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
