(May 27, 2022 – Lancaster, Pa.): Jorge Martinez turned in another strong start but was outdueled as the York Revolution offense, one night after erupting for 17 runs, was held to just one hit in a 3-2 loss to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Friday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium to open a four-game series.
The teams traded zeros through the first four innings, as Martinez and Lancaster’s Brent Teller both dazzled throughout the night.
The fifth inning finally saw the first runs of the game for the Barnstormers. Andretty Cordero and Anderson Feliz singled before Jake Hoover moved both ahead on a sacrifice bunt. Nine-hole batter Devon Torrence delivered the first major blow, yanking a two-run double down the right field line scoring both runners.
Kelly Dugan launched his 10th home run of the season to right-center field to lead things off in the bottom of the sixth inning, his 8th of which has come against York, making it 3-0.
Martinez (2-3) exited after the sixth, ending his day with nine strikeouts and just one walk in an eventual loss despite the strong effort.
The Revs finally got their first hit against Teller to lead off the seventh inning when JC Encarnacion clubbed a double to deep left-center field, his third double in two nights. After moving to third on a Melky Mesa flyout to deep right, Encarnacion scored the Revs’ first run of the game on a Nellie Rodriguez sacrifice fly lined to left.
Isaac Sanchez relieved Martinez for the seventh inning. After a leadoff single and a balk put Hoover in scoring position, Sanchez was able to force two pop outs and a groundout to get out of the inning without damage, keeping the deficit at 3-1.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Jack Kenley and Lenin Rodriguez worked back-to-back walks to create a threat. That would be all for Teller (3-3), who struck out a season-high 11 Revs hitters through 7.1 innings, allowing just the one hit for his evening.
Teller was relieved by right hander West Tunnell who unwound his first pitch right into Edwin Figuera’s back to load the bases. Troy Stokes Jr. capitalized with a sacrifice fly to right which scored a tagging Kenley to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Revs were kept behind, however, as a soft tapper by Encarnacion ended the inning as the third baseman Cordero charged the slow roller and fired to first to extinguish the threat.
The Revs faced Josh Graham in the ninth looking to come from behind against the fill-in closer. Graham hit Nellie Rodriguez with one out to put the tying run aboard but retired the next two to nail down his third save against the Revs this season.
The Revs will send Eduardo Rivera to the mound on Saturday, looking to replicate his previous start at the Clip when he dominated in a victory two weeks ago. He will be opposed by right-hander Oscar De La Cruz as the Revs look to even the series. Notes: The combined one-hitter is the ninth thrown against the Revs in franchise history and first by the Barnstormers; it is the first against York since 9/6/19 vs. Southern Maryland and first on the road since 6/2/15 at Long Island. Teller retired 18 of his first 19 including 13 straight to begin the game, tied for the third-longest streak to begin a game against the Revs in franchise history (longest since 7/14/19 vs. High Point). The six-inning no-hit bid is the fourth-longest against the Revs and longest since a seven-inning bid on 9/6/19 vs. Southern Maryland. Martinez has walked just five while striking out 40 batters in six starts this season. Jhoendri Herrera worked a scoreless eighth out of the Revs bullpen, increasing his league-leading appearance total to 16 on the season. Dugan’s eight homers already ties the record for most by an opposing batter against the Revs in one season, matching Southern Maryland’s Jeremy Owens (2009). York’s four-game winning streak in series openers is snapped.
