MATEO MAGNIFICENT IN 2-1 WIN

(June 8, 2017 – Waldorf, Md.):  Victor Mateo struck out ten over seven brilliant innings as the York Revolution won the final game of a seven-game road trip, 2-1 over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.  The Revs snap a three-game slide and avoid a sweep, and will return home Friday night to host the Lancaster Barnstormers.

Mateo (2-4) earned his second straight victory by allowing just one run in seven innings for the second consecutive start.  He limited the Blue Crabs to six hits and did not issue a walk while striking out a career high-tying 10 batters in the first double-digit strikeout performance by a Revs starter this season.

Mateo worked around leadoff hits in each of the first five innings, and stranded one runner in each of the first six innings before going 1-2-3 in the seventh to finish his outing.  He retired nine of his final ten batters faced, ending his performance by fanning Jose Lozada for his tenth punch out.

Southern Maryland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth as Zach Wilson led off with a single up the middle and Cory Vaughn tripled to deep right-center.  With Vaughn at third and still no outs, Mateo buckled down and retired the next three.  Vaughn was one of three runners stranded at third base by Mateo on the night.

Crabs starter Gaby Hernandez retired the first 12 batters before Michael Burgess reached on an error to begin the fifth.  Joel Guzman followed with a sharp single to left-center and Jared Mitchell then rapped an RBI single to right to tie the game.  Zach Cone overran the ball resulting in an error, putting runners at second and third with still no outs.  Hernandez came back with a strikeout for the first out, but Derrick Robinson launched a sac fly to left, bringing home Guzman for a 2-1 lead.

Hernandez (3-1) retired nine more in-a-row after the Mitchell base hit, and worked a nine-inning complete game in the loss, holding the Revs to just four total hits.

Ricardo Gomez fired his second perfect inning in as many appearances to work the eighth, and Brad Allen allowed just a one-out single by Cone, retiring Luis Alen on a 5-4-3 double play to secure the victory and notch his fourth save.

Notes: The Revs snapped a four-game skid against the Blue Crabs with the victory, improving to 3-6 head-to-head.  York had lost by a combined four runs on its three-game losing streak; Thursday’s victory improved the Revs’ record to 7-10 in one-run games.  York finishes its road trip with a 3-4 record.  The Revs (18-28) have played .500 ball (6-6) over their last 12 games.  Mateo has held opponents to one earned run or fewer in seven of his nine starts including each of the last three; he has allowed just three earned runs in 19.0 innings (1.42 ERA) over his last three starts.  Mateo’s other 10-strikeout performance came on July 8, 2011 with the Bowling Green Hot Rods in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, when he no-hit the Lake County Captains in seven innings; he also owns a nine-inning no-hitter which he threw two years later for Double-A Montgomery.  York righty Curtis Partch (2-3, 4.80) makes the start on Friday night, opposite Lancaster lefty Nate Reed (0-2, 4.72).  It is School’s Out Night and the third Boomer’s Book Club Night, presented by Harrisburg University.  Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
