Despite a two-hour rain delay due to a storm front over Sanford, Fla., the Orlando City U23 held strong, notching a late goal in the 85th minute to capture the 2-1 win over Mississippi Brilla FC at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, Fla. With the victory, Orlando jumps into third spot in the Southeast Division with four games left in the PDL regular season. Mississippi (5-6-1, 18 points) got up early in the match from a goal by Forward Felipe Silva. After an untimed cross by the U23s backline, Silva made them pay by rocketing a shot past Orlando Goalkeeper Brendan Moore in the lower left-hand corner to give Brilla a quick 1-0 advantage. It didnt take long for City (6-2-4 , 22 points) to respond as Orlando equalized with a strike of their own in the 26th minute. Johan Bergfeld, after a pass was deflected by Mississippi backline right to him, perfectly led a streaking Jonathan Mendoza on the far right side of the pitch. Mendoza, with a clear lane in front of him, blasted a low roller past Brilla Goalkeeper Davis Griffin to equalize the match at 1-1. Storm clouds began to hover over the complex as the players walked into the locker rooms, bringing about a lightning delay that lasted over two hours. The second half began shortly after 10:25 p.m., nearly three and a half hours after the game started. The two clubs continued to battle despite the long delay, going back and forth on possession and attacks throughout the final 45. Orlando finally broke through in the 85th minute, when following a free kick Defender Oumar Diakhite found the loose ball in a scrum around goal, beating the opposing goalkeeper to give City the 2-1 lead and victory. Orlando has little time before there next match as the U23s travel to Gavlak Stadium in Panama City Beach, Fla., to face the Panama City Beach Pirates on Friday, July 6. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. The two clubs met earlier in the season, with the Lions taking the 1-0 victory over the Pirates at the Seminole Soccer Complex.
