"Player for a Day" experience creates lasting memories for a new City fan“It felt like I was family.”
“It felt like I was family.”Spencer Phelps, the Director of Real Estate at Kimco Realty, was in a position he’d never been in before during Sunday’s win over Antigua Barracuda FC. The winner of an Orlando Health auction benefiting the Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families back in April, Phelps got to be a “player for the day” during Orlando’s last match against Antigua – which involved being with the team for pre-game and even wearing the full Orlando City kit while on the bench throughout the entire match. Phelps reflected on his experience and the fun he had at Sunday’s 2-0 win over Antigua. “Everyone made me feel so welcome,” he said. “Having a personalized jersey was awesome. After the match when I grabbed food, people were yelling ‘Go Orlando City!’ at me. The whole experience was just a great time. It felt like I was family.” Since Sunday was Father’s Day, Phelps was especially fond of having his family in the stands, which consisted of his son, stepdaughter, wife and grandson. “It was great to look up when I was on the field to see them smiling and cheering. It was certainly one of the best Father’s Days I’ve ever had.” Phelps, who never attended an Orlando City match before, is dead set on coming back the rest of the season to see his (former) teammates play, starting with Friday’s rematch of the 2011 USL PRO Championship against the Harrisburg City Islanders. “I’ll be there. I wouldn’t miss it for anything. ” |
