A special father's day for one dadAuction winner will be a "player for the day" at Orlando City match Sunday
Spencer Phelps, a Director of Real Estate at Kimco Realty, found himself a golden opportunity to participate in a sport he hasn’t played since high school. At the 6th annual Spring Swirl back in April, an Orlando Health Foundation event benefitting the Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families, Phelps bid and won an auction to be a “player for the day” at an Orlando City game during the 2012 season. That day is now less than 48 hours away. Phelps, who hasn’t played soccer since his high school days with Lake Howell, is excited to get on the pitch in front of his friends and family. “My son, Ryan, and my step-daughter, Summer, will be attending along with my wife and grandson, Wesley,” he said. “I can’t wait to see their faces when I walk out with the team. I think they’ll be speechless.” The auction winner will be with the team during pre-game warm-ups and on the bench during the match, even participating in the team photo before kickoff. He’ll be wearing a commemorative jersey made by United World Soccer along with the entire purple home kit. The real estate director is an avid triathlon competitor, with his most recent competition occurring in Cozumel with the Iron Man series. Even though he may have the stamina to be one of the players, there’s one thing he needs to do before he goes out on the pitch on Sunday. “I’ve got to get my soccer cleats,” he said. “I don’t think I have any lying around.” |
