ORLANDO, Fla. – With the help of a second half goal, the Orlando City U23s remained undefeated in PDL regular season play Thursday night in Bradenton, Fla. The Lions were down early but fought back to earn a 1-1 draw in a match against Southeast Division rival IMG Bradenton Academics.

Orlando (3-0-2) had its chances early in the match, including an attempt by Forward Moses Aduny. In the 18th minute, Aduny had a clear lane toward goal only for his attempt to sail just high and over the Bradenton crossbar.

Despite the initial Orlando offense, it was IMG (3-2-2) who got on the scoreboard first. In the 38th minute, Bradenton Midfielder Milovan Kapor notched his second goal of the season after putting a shot past Goalkeeper Brendan Moore, giving IMG the 1-0 lead.

Before halftime was called, a yellow card was handed to Bradenton’s Tomo Kinoshita after the forward committed a foul on Orlando team-captain Jonathan Mendoza. Mendoza proceeded to attempt a free kick, only for it to be controlled by the IMG backline as the first half drew to a close.

Looking for a spark in the second half, Orlando City U23s Head Coach Joe Avallone substituted in three U23 players in the 64th minute, including: Nick Sowers, Nicolas Russo and Anthony Arico. With the fresh legs, Orlando found new life.

In the 69th minute, Mendoza brought the game to an even 1-1 scoreline after rocketing in a goal from 30 yards out. The Altamonte Springs, Fla., native found his defender too far off the ball not to take an opportunity, with his shot landing between the posts - giving Orlando the goal and equalizer. The score was also the forward’s second of the season.

Orlando continued the attack throughout the later part of the match, with the U23s closest attempt to scoring coming off the head of Harrison Heath. Heath, the son of Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath, leapt up above a Bradenton defender- with his header narrowly missing the right crossbar. Even though City couldn’t capitalize late, the team took an important point on the road while staying undefeated in PDL regular season play.

The Lions travel to Ocala, Fla., next week to take on the Ocala Stampede for the second time in two weeks. On May 26, the U23s defeated the Stampede at the Seminole Soccer Complex by a score of 3-1, earning a share of the Southeast Division lead.
