ORLANDO, Fla. –The Orlando City U23s remained undefeated Saturday night as they topped the Panama City Beach Pirates 1-0 at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Forward Drew Helm scored Orlando’s first and only goal in the tenth minutes of the match, giving the U23s their second win in three games to start the 2012 PDL season.

Orlando (2-0-1) dominated possession from the start, with a quick goal occurring in the 10th minute that put the U23s up early. Midfielder Adama Mbengue worked his way past the Panama City (0-1-0) defense, connecting with Drew Helm on the right side of the pitch. Helm, making his third start in as many matches for the U23s, blasted in a shot in the upper-left corner to put Orlando up 1-0.

Panama City’s David Malloy, who was substituted in for Midfielder David Nelson minutes earlier, received a red card in the 40th minute after heading team-captain Jonathan Mendoza in the shoulder- leaving the forward down on the pitch to recover from the hit. Nelson received a red card shortly afterwards, leaving the Beach Pirates with only 10 men for the rest of the match.

The Panama City backline struggled to contain Orlando’s attack in the second half. The U23s pressed throughout the last 45 minutes, maintaining possession and creating multiple opportunities for their frontline. With the continued pressure, Orlando kept Panama City at bay, capturing the 1-0 win.

Orlando City U23s Head Coach Joe Avallone commented on his team’s victory after the match.

“Our boys are motivated,” said Avallone. “We played good football tonight. We’re getting the chances and with more practice time we’ll convert those opportunities. Our focus in now on Ocala (Stampede) next Saturday, who’ll be a tough team to play.”

The U23s continue their home stand at the Seminole Soccer Complex next Saturday, May 26, against the Ocala Stampede. The Stampede have yet to lose a match so far in 2012, leading the Southeast Division with a record of 4-0-1. Kickoff for the game is set for 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate an hour before kickoff at 3 p.m. Admission starts at $5 for kids 16 and under and just $10 for ages 17 and above.
