Jacksonville scored two goals in the final ten minutes of the game held at the Seminole Soccer Complex, advancing to the second round of the USOC. “Jacksonville’s players knew how to win tonight,” said Orlando City U23s Head Coach Joe Avallone. “We have to learn from this. That’s what the US Open Cup is all about.” The U23s were able to get the lead over JUFC after Forward Drew Helm drove his shot past a diving Stuart McCory in the 48th minute. Helm, after receiving a deflection from a shot by Nicolas Russo, rocketed in a goal outside the box to put Orlando up 1-0. Orlando City’s defense faced a tough test after the first goal was scored. Jacksonville pressed on the U23’s backline, creating multiple chances for the reigning NPSL champions. JUFC finally broke through in the 80th minute, after a handball was given to Orlando City Midfielder Oumar Diakhite inside the box. Jacksonville’s Tomislav Krizanovich, a former member of the Central Florida Kraze (now Orlando City U23s), converted the penalty attempt that followed in the upper left corner of the net, tying the match 1-1 with only seven minutes remaining. United’s scoring didn’t stop there, as Midfielder Ramak Safi netted a goal in the 88th minute – giving Jacksonville the 2-1 lead heading into the closing minutes. Orlando had one last-second attempt in stoppage time to even the score. After a volley in from a corner in the 90th minute, 6’3” Ryan Griffin leaped over the Jacksonville wall -only for his header to bounce up and over the JUFC net and out of play. The final whistle blew soon after, ending the U23s hopes of a run in the Open Cup for the 2012 season. The Orlando City U23s resume regular season play this Saturday, May 19, at the Seminole Soccer Complex against the Panama City Beach Pirates. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate an hour before kickoff at 6 p.m. Admission starts at $5 for kids 16 and under and just $10 for ages 17 and above.
