Yesterday, Orlando’s new minor league hockey team, the Solar Bears, announced their NHL affiliation.  During the day’s events, Orlando Mayor Buddy took time to acknowledge that the Solar Bears are not the only new team in town making waves in the community.

“What’s great about both the Solar Bears and Orlando City, the ownership are committed to Orlando,” said Dyer.  “They’re embracing youth sports in both hockey and soccer.”

A commitment to community is something that has always been part of the fabric of Orlando City.  The Lions have established the Orlando City Foundation to fund our charity efforts around Central Florida, and are also working to grow the game through Orlando City Youth Soccer.

Orlando has rewarded City’s commitment by embracing the club.  Last week’s match was the clearest sign that Orlando has welcomed the Lions as part of Orlando’s sports culture.  Despite the Magic playing a pivotal playoff game at the Amway Center on the same day, we saw an increase of nearly 1,000 tickets sold for the third game of the season compared to 2011.  Season ticket sales have also more than doubled compared to last year.
