U-23s: City signs two Flager standoutsAll-American Johan Bergfeld, All-Conference selection Will Frandsen join U23 team
ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City Soccer Club announced today the signing of Midfielder Johan Bergfeld and Midfielder Will Frandsen, pending USSF approval. Bergfeld was recently named a Daktronics All-American while Frandsen was selected to the All-Peach Belt Conference second team. Bergfeld earned many accolades in four years at Flagler College. In 2011, he was named to the Daktronics first-team all-Southeast Region along with Peach Belt All-Conference honors. Bergfeld is also a Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-America honoree. The midfielder started all 23 matches for Flagler in 2011, scoring six goals including a team-high four game-winners, which also tied him for the lead in the Peach Belt Conference. Bergfeld was recently named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year after totaling 17 points in 2011. Orlando City U23 Head Coach Joe Avallone spoke highly of Bergfeld and the control he possesses on the pitch. “Johan plays at a high level,” said Avallone. “He understands the flow of the game and will be a great addition to the team.” The second signing by Orlando was Bergfeld’s teammate, Will Frandsen. Frandsen was a four-year starter at Flagler, appearing in 77 matches while starting 64 of them. He totaled five goals in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons while adding two assists in 2011. Frandsen was recently named to the All-Peach Belt Conference second team while attending Flagler. Orlando City U23 Head Coach Joe Avallone commented on what Frandsen can bring to the squad in 2012 and beyond. “Will has tremendous upside potential,” said Avallone. “He has the right skills and attitude to play at the next level.” Orlando City is gearing up for their U23 open tryouts, which will be held on March 10 and 11 at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, Fla. Saturday, March 10’s session starts at 10 a.m. with Sunday’s beginning at 9 a.m. The try outs are open to the public. Walk-up registration for the tryouts begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
