Orlando, Fla. - Orlando City defeated Old Dominion University 3-1 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Monday.  John Rooney led the Lions with a goal and two assists.

The Lions struck first, as John Rooney scored off of a header in the 19th minutes from trialist Aaron Schoenfeld. Kevin Molino placed a cross from the right wing deep and to the back post.  The 6”4’ Tennessee native soared above the keeper, but was unable to direct his header at goal.  Instead, Schoenfeld put it down to Rooney for the easy tap-in.  Schoenfeld was forced to leave the match soon after due to an eye injury.

City continued to put on pressure, using their speed up top in combination with a high defensive line.  The high line would ultimately give the Monarchs an opportunity.  In the 36th minute, the speedy Yannick Smith timed his run perfectly with City’s high offside trap and blew past Kieron Bernard, still recovering from offseason ankle surgery.  One on one with City netminder Miguel Gallardo, Smith placed his shot low and to the far post, just out of Gallardo’s reach for the equalizer.  The half ended with the score knotted at one a piece.

The Lions began to mount more of an attack in the second, with multiple chances occurring with Chin breaking away from Dominion's back line. Chin finally notched a goal in the 59th, as a great through-ball from Rooney put the Oviedo native in perfect position to beat Goalkeeper Victor Francoz and give Orlando the 2-1 lead.  Francoz seemed to have Chin forced out of bounds, but the fleet-footed Jamaican-American surprised him with a last-ditch shot at point-blank range.  Francoz turned too late, just as the ball went through his legs and into the back of the net.

“I had a lot of chances beforehand where I really wanted to score,” Chin said. “It was good to get a goal after trying so hard earlier in the match.”

Orlando continued to pressure the Monarch defense in the second half, with many younger City players getting key playing time as the match wore on,  including local products Nick Sowers, Nico Russo, and 15-year old Harrison Heath, son of Head Coach Adrian Heath.

“It was an overall good try by our team,” said Heath. “Getting our younger players out there was good for them and the squad. I think we still have a lot of things to work on, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Ian Fuller added an insurance goal in the 75th minute as Rooney gave Fuller an open look outside the box, with the midfielder blasting in a shot well above the reach of Francoz.

Orlando City’s next collegiate friendly will be on March 14 against Rollins. The match will be held at Cahall Sandspur Field and Barker Family Stadium in Winter Park, Fla. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.  For more information, visit www.orlandocitysoccer.com today.
