Regaining Form Lions' all-time leading scorer, Dennis Chin, has scored four times in the past five games
Forward Dennis Chin has been looking like his old self as of late. Chin, who is currently the Lions’ all-time leading scorer with 23 goals in four seasons, seems to have regained his 2012 form after scoring four times in City’s last five USL PRO matches. After earning the nickname ‘Super Sub’ in his rookie season in 2011, Chin broke into the starting lineup the following year and led USL PRO in goals and points. At the time, Chin’s 11 goals were also a club record for the most in a season, but Dom Dwyer surpassed that mark in 2013 with a league-high 15 goals. In the midst of Dwyer’s record-breaking season, Chin struggled to find the back of the net, as the striker only managed to score 5 goals in the regular season before adding four in the Lions’ three playoff matches. Since then, however, the Oviedo, Fla. native has been playing with a new sense of determination. According to Chin, his recent reinvigorated performances has a lot to do with a conversation held between him and the coaching staff after he recorded his first goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Rochester in April. “I’m not a young player, but I’m still getting into my professional game,” Chin said at the conclusion of Tuesday’s training session. “We spoke about the things I need to do better and just working harder in training. Ever since I’ve taken that on board and really taken it to heart, everything seems to be going well for me.” But Chin’s return back into scoring form wasn’t fully on display until the 32nd minute of Sunday’s match against OKC, when the striker leapt into the air and employed his 38-inch vertical to nod home a cross from Kevin Molino. Chin, who is not known for scoring goals with his head, believes he’s only scored two, maybe three, headers in his career. He jokingly said after practice that he would probably retire if he ever scores a hat-trick with his head. “He’s playing with a lot of enthusiasm right now,” added Head Coach Adrian Heath. “He’s working hard in training and getting his rewards in games. I’m a big believer of ‘you get out what you put in,’ and he’s putting a lot in at this moment. As long as he keeps performing at this level and doesn’t let his energy or production level drop, he’s a got a chance of staying in the first team.” However, for Chin this year is not only about his individual accolades as the local striker stressed that his goal is to help the team win in any way possible and hopefully finish its final USL PRO season as champions once again. “Personally, I just hope Orlando City leaves USL PRO a champion again,” Chin concluded. “I just want to score enough goals for us to win every game. Whether it is five, ten, or 15, it just matters how we do as a team.” |
