Tryouts Recap Upwards of 240 players tried out for the Orlando City pro team this past weekend
Orlando City's fourth-ever open tryouts, and last in the USL PRO prior to entering Major League Soccer in Sanford, Fla., concluded Sunday morning at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, Fla. The largest pool of players in tryout history, with the final count reaching upwards of 240, came out to show their talent for the Orlando City coaching staff throughout the Feb. 1-2 weekend. Leading the evaluation of the players was Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. Heath, who has found such talent as Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo and MLS-bound Midfielder Yordany Alvarez in open tryouts, stressed that these kinds of events are critical to finding those players who may have fallen through the cracks. "It's a great way to look at players from all over," Heath said. "I know some players packed up their car from Ohio to drive here the night before. It gives them a chance to be looked at from professional coaches for an extended period of time." Players attending the tryout represented nationalities all over the world. A majority came from the US, South America and Europe, but Brazil, Germany, Columbia, France, Italy, England and Caribbean nations were also represented. Attendees were put onto teams of 15 each morning prior to the 8 a.m. start time, playing against other squads for 20 minute scrimmages. Teams would then rotate around, giving each coach a chance to see all the players. Each scrimmage was led by Orlando City coaching staff, including many from Orlando City Youth Soccer (OCYS). One of the aforementioned staffers assisting with the process Orlando City Midfielder/Assistant Coach James O'Connor, who commented on the talent pool from the 2014 edition of the tryout, saying that there was a few players who caught his eye. "We definitely saw some talent out here." After Sunday's tryouts, Heath and his staffers will get together and see if there are players they'd like to look at further throughout preseason. "I think we had a really good group this weekend," said Heath. "We're now going to evaluate and move forward. If there's somebody here who shows lots of talent, we can definitely work with them. We also have our U23 team for the players who are a bit younger, with them able to develop at the PDL level if we see fit." The former Everton striker also said that he was impressed by the sheer numbers, with that an indication of the growth the club has seen in the market since it's inaugural year in 2011. "The numbers have gone up every year. That shows that we are becoming more and more engrained in the community." For more updates on this year's tryouts, stay tuned to OrlandoCitySC.com |
