Long-Term Goals New VP of Soccer Operations has sights set high for Orlando City SC
New Orlando City Vice President of Soccer Operations Paul McDonough is ready to get to work. If you missed the news, McDonough recently joined the front office after an extensive career in scouting and recruiting soccer talent, including spending the past two years as the Director of Global Soccer at Wasserman Media Group. So what about the Orlando position appealed to the Boston, Mass., native? “The opportunity and the challenge to start with a blank canvas, to do something special,” he said. “The environment and atmosphere around here the past few years has been great. I think it’s only going to get better moving forward.” Moving into the new position, McDonough will be in charge of building the club’s scouting network, managing the club’s MLS salary cap, negotiating and liaising with the League Office on all player transactions. “My short term goal is to get acclimated to the team, to get ready for MLS,” McDonough added. “Short term and long-term scouting is something that needs to be put in place a lot of different aspects to the organization and a lot of things to get ready. But my long term goals is to make the club very competitive in the major leagues.” McDonough also spoke on his vision for Orlando City Youth Soccer (OCYS), saying the importance of youth structures will only increase as MLS continues its upward growth. “As time goes on, I’ll also need to focus on our Academy system and see how we can improve that. Home grown players are going to be a big part of our club moving forward.” When asked, ‘Where do you see the club in five years?’, McDonough responded with a few simple replies, but one that he believes the club can accomplish within that time. “(I think we’ll be) Selling out every game, winning championships and competing on the international scene with clubs.” |
