Remaining Confident Orlando City President Phil Rawlins excited for upcoming vote on Tuesday, encourages ‘last push’ by supporters
Orlando City President Phil Rawlins talks with media members Monday alongside City Commissioner Samuel Ings, USWNT Head Coach Tom Sermanni and Orlando Venues Executive Director Allen Johnson Three years ago, Orlando City President Phil Rawlins stood in front of members of the media inside the Florida Citrus Bowl, declaring his vision to bring Major League Soccer (MLS) to Orlando within five years. On Tuesday, that vision may come one giant step closer to occurring. Orlando City is awaiting a vote on a venues package that includes a new, downtown soccer stadium. If the vote passes Tuesday afternoon, the club would be able to enter into final negotiations with MLS to award an expansion team. Rawlins has stated multiple times that, if a positive vote occurs, a franchise could be awarded as early as November. “It’s a very exciting time to be a fan of soccer in Orlando,” Rawlins said in an interview with OrlandoCitySoccer.com. “We are on the verge of bringing a second major league team to Central Florida.” Rawlins encourages supporters to send one last round of emails and phone calls to the Orange County Commissioners, along with attending the meeting on Tuesday at the County Administration Building. I just encourage everyone to make one last push and contact the Commissioners. Make your voice heard. Come out and wear purple on Tuesday and show them that MLS belongs in Orlando.” Rawlins, who has been at the forefront of the ‘MLS to Orlando’ movement since day one, said the club is in a favorable position heading into the weekend- with just a few days left until the final decision is made on stadium funding. “This is where I want to be,” Rawlins added. “I’ve always thought this market deserved a MLS team. We are on the cusp of that.” Stay tuned for all of the updates on Tuesday’s vote by visiting OrlandoCitySoccer.com. Continue to be active on social media by using hashtags #Believe and #7Votes. |
