Match Preview Orlando City Plays VSI Tampa Bay Wednesday Lions can capture home playoff game with win Wednesday night over Tampa
Photo: Scott Miller ORLANDO, Fla.— Orlando City SC (13-3-6, 45 points) square off against VSI Tampa Bay (9-9-4, 31 points) on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Bank Field at the Florida Citrus Bowl, just three days after the two met in Plant City. The Lions, who qualified for the playoffs Sunday, can capture a home playoff match in the 2013 USL PRO postseason quarterfinals with a win Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EST “We have to focus in on Wednesday,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. “Playing VSI back-to-back isn’t going to be easy, but the win (Sunday) puts us on a good platform moving forward.” Orlando defeated VSI Tampa Bay 3-0 Sunday night, with three different Lions (Christian Duke, Rob Valentino and Freddie Braun) scoring in the victory. Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo earned his fifth shutout of the 2013 season in the win, making key saves in the second half to not allow a Tampa goal. With only four games left in the regular season, playoff positioning will be coming down to the wire as the season comes to a close. Orlando currently sits three points behind top-place Richmond, with a game in-hand on the Kickers. The two sides square off in Richmond on August 14, a game that may indicate if the Lions will win a third-straight regular season title. The Lions also play the Seattle Sounders Reserves on August 11, with the home finale coming on August 17 against the Charlotte Eagles. A win over Tampa would guarantee a home playoff match in the quarterfinals for the Lions, with the game set for Saturday, August 24, at Fifth Third Bank Field at the Florida Citrus Bowl in case of the victory. Wednesday’s match was originally scheduled for April 30, with the game moved back due to severe weather. Fans are encouraged to bring their ticket stub from the April 30 match to gain entry into the game. Orlando Venues parking permits from the April 30 game will be honored for the rescheduled game on August 7. Fans are required to present their original stubs and bring it with them on Wednesday. Stubs will not be counted for other Orlando City regular season matches and friendlies in 2013. |
