Assistant Head Coach Ian Fuller says break in play couldn’t have come at better time

Good timing is everything.

Assistant Coach/Midfielder Ian Fuller commented on the current break Orlando is experiencing before their next match on August 3, stressing the importance of rest in his conversation with OrlandoCitySoccer.com.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time for us,” Fuller said. “(Head Coach) Adrian (Heath) and I were looking at the guys after Saturday’s game and they were completely drained. The next couple of weeks are going to give us the rest we need to finish the season strong.”

Orlando City recently completed a brutal stretch of matches, capping off six games in 18 days with a 3-1 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders. Midfielder Jean Alexandre scored two in his return from CONCACAF Gold Cup action while Dennis Chin notched his fourth of the season in the win.

The Lions went 2-0-4 during the stretch, traveling to Wilmington, Charleston, Dayton and Pittsburgh in the month of July.

“We haven’t been able to work on specifics at the training ground due to the traveling back and forth,” added Fuller. “We’re taking a look at a few tweaks (playing wise), but getting the guys work that need work and rest that need rest is important. Managing that at training is what we’re going to do.”

Fuller stressed that competition is still lively within the squad, with every spot open as the club enters the final month of the season.

“The best players will play during that stretch (in August). It’s going to be all hands on deck. The guys that haven’t been playing can prove to us that they deserve a starting role. “Adrian’s (Heath) philosophy is the best player will play. The name on the back doesn’t matter. “

“These next two weeks are going to be important.”
