Orlando City U23s Top Southwest Florida Adrenaline 2-1
Tyler Blackwood and Nicolas Russo both score to give the Lions their fourth win in a row

SANFORD, Fla.— The Orlando City U23s topped Southwest Florida Adrenaline 2-1 on Wednesday, June 19, at Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, Fla. The win marks the Lions’ fourth consecutive victory, and retains the U23s’ first place position in the Southeast Division.

“We looked very sharp in the first 25-30 minutes,” said Head Coach Paul Shaw after the match. “I think all of our players are starting to get used to the standard that we demand and how we want them to play, but we’ve still got work to do.”

The U23s began the match in pristine form, and penetrated the Southwest Florida Adrenaline defense from many different areas of the pitch. The Lions dominated possession of the ball from the opening whistle, and Midfielder David Graydon was instrumental in each of the U23 attacking plays.

The Irishman was very active and played many dangerous through balls to the Lions’ attacking players, but the U23s struggled to find their finishing touch.

The young Lions would eventually breakthrough and go up a goal in the 33rd minute of play. Striker Robbie Kristo collected the ball outside the Adrenaline 18-yard box, and squared it for Striker Tyler Blackwood who was lurking outside the area. Blackwood, who has a league-high ten goals so far this season, controlled the ball well and calmly slotted it into the back of the net.

In light of the Lions’ goal, the Naples-based side began venturing forward and created several opportunities for themselves in search of an equalizer. Orlando City U23s Goalkeeper Tomas Gomez and the back four remained intact during the Adrenaline’s brief attacking spell, and anchored the Lions to a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Southwest Florida Adrenaline began the second half aggressively and attempted to disrupt the Lions with high pressure. After a few minutes, the U23s made the necessary adjustments and began moving the ball around the pitch with a purpose.

In the 73rd minute, Blackwood received a dangerous ball deep inside the final third, and skipped past several Adrenaline defenders. The lethal striker glided into the box and unselfishly set the ball for Midfielder Nicolas Russo, who tucked his effort past Hackett’s glove and into the back of the net.

Southwest Florida Adrenaline would convert an attempt of their own, when the referee awarded a penalty kick in the 90th minute of play. Midfielder Lewis Hilton stepped up for the Adrenaline and had his effort saved by Gomez, who parried it wide. However, the referee called encroachment on the City defense, and Hilton was given a second chance. The midfielder made Gomez guess the wrong way on his second attempt, and gave the Adrenaline their only goal of the game.

The U23s now turn their attention to the Panama City Beach Pirates, who visit the Lions on Saturday, June 22. The Pirates defeated the U23s 1-0 earlier
