Orlando City Defender Brian Fekete talks about his rookie season and more

Since joining Orlando City during the offseason, Midfielder Brian Fekete’s time with the Lions has been what he calls ‘Learning.’ Orlandocitysoccer.com sat down with the University of Tampa product to talk about life as a rookie and how things in Orlando are shaping him to be a better player.

“It’s a big learning experience for me,” said Fekete. “I’ve been sitting behind Bodz (Defender Luke Boden) who’s the best left-back in the league. He’s a good player to watch and learn.”

Before joining the Lions in 2013, Fekete spent a two-week trial with Sporting Kansas City in Tucson, Arizona, where he trained under Head Coach Peter Vermes. Despite not getting the opportunity to join Sporting, his hard work and perseverance landed him in Orlando City colors.

“My family is very supportive of me during my transition to Orlando City,” added Fekete. “My trial at Sporting Kansas City was a big learning experience and for my family to keep me grounded is humbling.”

Fekete also credits his development by learning the left-back position from Luke Boden, who has started and played every game this season.

“Whenever we’re doing pattern play at practice with the mannequins, we sit together and when one is not working, I’m learning and communicating with him,” said Fekete. “From playing division two soccer in Tampa where many people underrate us, I pushed myself and I’m happy that I’m able to learn under Head Coach Adrian Heath.”

With a busy schedule ahead this summer, Head Coach Adrian Heath will start mixing up the squad which will see Fekete see playing time for the first time this season.

“He has to be ready to play when he gets called up to play,” said Heath. “Everybody will be playing this weekend, I know what it’s like to not see playing time. He’s a big contributor to the team.”
