Kelley Talks Goalkeeping Competition Sean Kelley talks about starting role as Lions’ goalkeeper and competition at the spot
After being signed late in the preseason, veteran Orlando City Goalkeeper Sean Kelley has played in three consecutive matches for the Lions. Orlandocitysoccer.com sat down with the 2011 USL PRO Championship MVP to talk about the Lions’ depth in goalkeeping this season, along with his thoughts on competition and more. “It’s nice to have a few back-to-back starts, and I’m feeling confident,” said Kelley. “It’s a good atmosphere in training and with two other guys, it pushes us to do better.” Adding competition to Kelley’s streak is the return of Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo, who will be available this Saturday for selection after picking up an injury before the season kicked off. “I’ve known Miguel since 2010 and we have a good relationship training with each other,” said Kelley. “We’re both fighting for the same spot, but regardless of what coach does we’ve got to put the team first.” Gallardo, who has been out for nearly a month, is keen to make a comeback to Head Coach Adrian Heath’s starting XI. This only adds more to the competition for the goalie position. “It’s about earning a spot in the team,” said Gallardo. “Both Jon (Kempin) and Sean (Kelley) have done a good job, but I’m itching to get back into the game.” Kelley, who was exploring his options as a free agent during the offseason, made a return to the Lions right as the season started. Despite having to fight for a starting role as goalie, he added that the competition between the keepers is good for the team. “We all want to contribute to the team winning. Jon is pretty young and has a lot of experience since training with Sporting (Kansas City), and Miguel is a top veteran in the league,” added Kelley. When Kelley was asked on who will Head Coach Adrian Heath call-up as starting goalkeeper on Saturday, he said that he’s ready to put the gloves on, but the team has “a good selection” from which the coach can choose.
