Orlando, Fla. – A second half score by VSI Tampa earned the Flames a 1-1 draw against the Orlando City U23s at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Sanford, Fla., leaving Sunday’s match against FC Jax Destroyers the Lions last hope to secure a playoff spot in 2012.

Orlando (7-3-5, 26 points) got on the scoreboard first with a score by Defender Oumar Diakhite. In the 34th minute a long throw-in by Sean Reynolds found Gonzalo DeMjujica just inside the six-yard box. DeMujica tapped it over to Diakhite, who slotted home the Orlando score to give the Lions the 1-0 advantage. The goal marked the defender’s fourth of the season.

A defensive mishap by Orlando early in the second half got VSI (6-5-4, 22 points) right back into the match. In the 65th minute, Orlando Goalkeeper Chip Sanders fed a pass to the Orlando City backline, who gave away possession onto a charging Flames frontline. VSI perfectly led Forward Carlos Tenorio, who beat Sanders to equalize the match at 1-1.

Orlando responded with multiple offensive attacks, not allowing VSI to take a breather. In the 79th minute, a barrage of City attacks were attempted but denied by VSI Goalkeeper Brenton Muhammad, who made two diving saves to keep the scoreline even. Muhammad continued to deflect every U23 attack, even in the final seconds of play, to end the game in a 1-1 draw.

A draw moves the U23s into a tie with second-place IMG Bradenton Academics with one game left in the regular season. The result also knocks VSI out of playoff contention. The Lions currently lose the tiebreaker with the Academics due to head-to-head records between the two teams, but the Academics have no matches left.

The first seed has already been clinched by division-leader Ocala Stampede. Ocala will most likely host the first round of the playoffs at their home pitch of Trinity Catholic High School. Four teams, the top two from Southeast and Mid South Divisions, would square off in next week’s opening round of playoff matches.

City’s next match is Sunday, July 15, against FC Jax Destroyers. The two clubs have only met one time in 2012, resulting in a 1-1 draw at SSC. A win or a draw against the Jacksonville-based club would give the U23s the second seed in the Southeast Division and clinch a playoff spot.
