RailCats add to pitching staff for 2022
Gary, IN - The Gary SouthShore RailCats have signed pitchers Chris Erwin and John Sheaks. Both pitchers return to Gary for their second season.
Erwin, 26 is a native of Grayson, Georgia and played four seasons at Kennesaw State University. He worked 52.1 innings in 14 appearances (9 starts) in 2021. The left-hander finished the season with a 3-5 record, a 3.10 ERA and 44 strikeouts.
In 2018, Erwin had stints with Sussex County of the Can-Am League and then the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League. He also played in the Washington League during the 2020 season for Brillance.
During his time at Kennesaw State, Erwin was utilized as a two-way player all four years (2014-2017) where he also played outfield. As a pitcher he finished with a 13-13 career record and a 4.74 ERA and 185 strikeouts. At the plate Erwin finished with a .332 career batting average with 165 hits, including 32 doubles and 90 RBI. Erwin was named to the 2014 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman team and 2015 Atlantic Sun Conference All-Second Team.
Sheaks, 24, is a native of San Clemente, California and played collegiately at Long Beach State University. He signed with the RailCats on July 11, 2021, his first professional contract. The right-hander went 1-6 in nine starts while striking out 38.
In two seasons at LBSU, Sheaks appeared in 32 games (22 ). He struck out 71 batters in 124.1 innings pitched and finished with a 10-5 career record.
“Chris and John solidified themselves into our rotation and established themselves as quality American Association starting pitchers,” said manager Greg Tagert. “I’m excited and looking forward to what both can accomplish in 2022 for the RailCats.”
