Earthquakes Celebrate New Stadium with Groundbreaking Promotion

If you build it they will come. If you need help building it, make it fun… and order lot’s of shovels! Just ask the San Jose Earthquakes who received final approval for their new 18,000 seat soccer specific stadium in 2014 and staged an event that would celebrate and commemorate the magnitude of the occasion.

The Earthquakes set out to break the World Record for the largest participation in a ground breaking. The team pre-registered over 5,500 fans and the turnout on groundbreaking day was an astounding 6,256 people crushing the previous mark of 4,532, set in India in 2007. The feat was officially validated by Guinness Book of World Records’ officials who were on hand to witness the event. Each of the participants left with a smile, the satisfaction of being a world record holder, and a commemorative shovel to memorialize the event.

In Stadium Promotions, the sports division of The Promotions Dept.; Torrance, Ca , provides the Earthquakes with premium and promotional merchandise for game day and event marketing.

“It is definitely right up there as one of the more unique projects we have done ” said John Tulchin, Vice President of In Stadium Promotions. “The shovel itself was highly customized; it was decorated on the handle and shaft and we pantone matched the handle and spade color to The Earthquakes blue. The bigger challenge was the timeline; we were adjusting the order quantity as more and more people registered. We even changed the shovel design after we had already begun production, the ground was quite firm and there was a concern that it wouldn’t be much of a groundbreaking without shovels that could in fact break ground.”

2013 NSF SAMMY Award Winner

“It was fun to be a part of” adds Richard Hill, project manager. “I’ve got one in the corner of my office, nobody asks me about all the bobble heads and caps, everyone walks over and picks up the shovel.
