Team: Vermont Expos (Single A)

 

Program Title: Baseball's for Newborns

 

Objectives: There were three main objectives for this initiative:

  1. To develop and sell a new piece of sponsorship inventory.

  2. To create an affinity between people in the community and the team, by utilizing a premium item that fans will save for years to come.

  3. To have more people sampling Vermont Expos baseball.

 

Program Description: The Vermont Expos had a "brand-new" fan base this past season - thanks to a unique initiative the team implemented that involves an area hospital, new-born babies, and their proud parents!

 

The program is simple…

 

Each time a baby is born at Fletcher Allen (a local hospital), the hospital and the Vermont Expos give the family a baseball with “It’s a Boy” or “It’s a Girl” written on the side, to commemorate the special day. The ball also has a picture of the Expos’ mascot, Champ, as well as Fletcher Allen’s logo on it. What’s more, the proud parents also receive two complimentary tickets to a future Expos game.

 

Media: The local media in Burlington, Vermont, picked up on this program. The NBC affiliate WPTZ did a feature on it in one of its newscasts, the Burlington Free Press had an article about it, and multiple radio stations in the area covered it as well.

 

Sponsor: Fletcher Allen was the sponsor of this program, they signed a two year deal with the Expos. Aside from getting their logo on the ball, Fletcher Allen also received their logo on the bat boy and bat girl's uniforms, as well as two privately held BBQs during the season.

 

Results: This program resulted in a win, win, win situation. The Expos were happy to generate incremental sponsorship revenue as well as have more people sampling their product… Fletcher Allen was happy to give the parents a lasting premium item with their logo on it… and the families were excited to receive their child’s first baseball and tickets to a game.  All told, around 600 balls were given out over the course of the season.

 

Looking Ahead: With the tremendous success of this year’s program, the Expos and Fletcher Allen are both greatly looking forward to the second year of this deal, as well as discussing a possible extension.
