ORGANIZATION: Cleveland Indians

PROGRAM TITLE: Tribe Pride Party

OBJECTIVES: How can fans still have the thrill and excitement of a playoff game experience when their team is on the road?  During the 2007 Major League Baseball postseason, the Cleveland Indians turned this question into reality by providing fans the chance to watch and support the team throughout all potential postseason road games at Progressive Field (formerly Jacobs Field). The Indians wanted to turn Progressive Field into the “Largest Sports Bar and Restaurant” in Cleveland through hosting the “Tribe Pride Party” so fans could show their “Tribe Pride” and watch playoff games on the biggest TV screen in Cleveland.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The city of Cleveland had hosted viewing parties at different venues during past postseason appearances.  This time around, by holding these events at Progressive Field, it provided the club with more opportunities to brand the team and gave the Indians control of the promotions surrounding the events and the entertainment during the events.  Fans were encouraged to visit indians.com or one of the Team Shops (which drove retail traffic) to access the two “Tribe Pride Party” options.  The first option was free general admission to the entire lower seating bowl (approximately 10,000 seats).  The second option was the Club Lounge “Ultimate Sports Bar Experience”.  For a reasonable price of $25 per ticket, those looking for that “Ultimate Sports Bar Experience” could purchase a select number of Club Seat tickets, which provided fans with unlimited ballpark food and non-alcoholic beverages, along with access to the private full service Club Lounge Bar.  In addition to the actual game, there was never a break in the action as between-inning entertainment included contests, giveaways, music and more fun.  All concession and souvenir stands in the lower seating bowl were open during the events.  A special Kids Zone was constructed and featured inflatables, face painters, magicians and the popular Indians mascot, Slider.

MEDIA:  Tribe Pride Parties were promoted in a number of ways, including the Indians website (Indians.com) where fans could obtain tickets and event information, newspaper advertisements, live radio and television announcements. Also, leading up to the Tirbe Pride Parties, scoreboard and PA announcements were made during the Indians’ home postseason games.

PARTNERS:  The Indians promoted Tribe Pride Parties through their flagship stations, asking various local radio and television personalities to host each event. The local radio personalities were happy to provide free publicity for the Tribe Pride Parties.

RESULTS:  Each “Tribe Pride Party” netted additional revenue in concessions and merchandise sales. 14,000+ was the highest attendance for one of the ALCS games against the Boston Red Sox. Event pictures and stories regularly appeared on the front page and sports section of the local newspaper, The Plain Dealer. Furthermore, local television stations broadcasted live reports from the events during their nightly newscasts. One station even provided a weather segment live from Progressive Field.

LOOKING AHEAD: “Tribe Pride Parties” were a successful promotion for the Cleveland Indians. Should they be fortunate enough to appear in postseason play next year and beyond, a great template has been put in place to work from and the Indians will “more than likely host these events again.”
