Sanford, Fla. - Orlando City Soccer Club set a new club scoring record, defeating KC Athletics 7-0 in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the Seminole Soccer Complex Tuesday night. With the win, Orlando City will travel to Kansas City, Kan, to face Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City in the third round of the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States.

“I thought it was a great win for the club,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath.  “Our next (Open Cup) match will be against a tough Kansas City squad.”

City got on top early, with the help of an own goal from KC Defensemen Cody Andrews. Erik Ustruck crossed the ball in front the Athletics’ keeper in the fourth minute and into a collection of players from both clubs. Andrews attempted to clear out the ball, but instead headed it in past Goalkeeper Steven Grow for Orlando’s first goal of the night.

The Lions kept the pressure on after the own-goal, with Orlando breaking through 20 minutes later via Max Griffin. Midfielder Charlie Campbell found Griffin outside the 18-yard box, collecting the well-placed long ball with a clear lane ahead of him. After one touch the forward rocketed in City’s second goal of the night.

The third goal of the match came minutes later, when John Rooney knocked in a header inside the six-yard box after Midfielder Jamie Watson crossed it to the streaking Liverpool native- putting Orlando up 3-0.  The Lions capitalized one more score before half, as the Campbell-Griffin combination found another once again for City’s fourth goal of the half when Griffin knocked in a header from Campbell’s corner attempt.

Orlando continued the scoring in the second half, with unassisted goals coming from Watson in the 60th, Rooney in the 70th and finally Matt Luzunaris in the 86th to propel Orlando to a 7-0 lead and victory.

With the win, Orlando City will travel to Kansas City, Kan., to face Sporting Kansas City of the MLS in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. The match will be held at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, Kansas City’s new soccer-specific stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. EST next Tuesday, May 29.

Before the Open Cup continues, the Lions have two league matches at the Florida Citrus Bowl.  The LA Blues come to Orlando for the first ever meeting between LA and Orlando on Thursday.  The Lions’ season-opening opponent Charlotte Eagles comes to town Saturday to close out the season series.  Both matches kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
