ORLANDO, Fla.— Orlando City enters into the 100th edition of the US Open Cup this Tuesday, May 21, in Ocala, Fla., against the Ocala Stampede (PDL) at Forest High School. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m. “We approach the game just like any other game,” said Orlando City Defender Rob Valentino. “We don’t ever want to underestimate teams. We’ll go in there with the right attitude and hopefully prevail with a win.” Orlando City enters into the tournament with seven other USL PRO clubs and six NASL sides in the second round of play. The Lions have yet to fall in the second round of the Open Cup, topping the Charleston Battery (USL PRO) in 2011 and KC Athletics (USASA) in 2012, advancing to the third round each time. The Ocala Stampede compete in the same division as the Orlando City U23s in the PDL, earning a spot in this year’s knockout tournament after an impressive 2012 season in which the Stampede finished atop the Southeast Division with a record of 11-2-3. The club is led by Head Coach Cheyne Roberts, who retired after spending time with the Charlotte Eagles from 2010-2012. The PDL side advanced to the second round of play after topping Red Force (USASA) in Miami, Fla., at Florida International University (FIU) 4-2 behind two Kenny Hoggs goals. The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States and is open to United States Soccer Federation (USSF) affiliated teams. The Open Cup was first held in 1913, with this year marking the centennial edition of the tournament. This year’s field is made up of 68 teams, the largest field in US Open Cup history. Before the Open Cup match, the Lions continue regular season play away from home this Friday and Saturday against the Harrisburg City Islanders (5-1-0, 15 points) and Rochester Rhinos (1-5-1, 4 points). The games will kick off at 7 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., respectively and will be livestreamed on USLNation.com.
