U23s Fight Back to Draw Panama City
Romario Williams’ 81st minute goal secures point for Orlando City U23s

Sanford, Fla. – The Orlando City U23s drew the Panama City Beach Pirates 1-1 on Sunday evening at Seminole Soccer Complex. After going down 1-0 in the first half, the U23s earned a point when Forward Romario Williams equalized in the 81st minute.

The Orlando City U23s have been in excellent form to begin the 2014 Premier Development League (PDL) campaign, as the young Lions went unbeaten in its opening six matches, including a win over Charleston Battery of USL PRO.

However, after suffering their first loss of the season on Friday, which came in the form of a 2-0 defeat to Floridians F.C., the young Lions entered today’s match with hopes of securing all three points as they continue to prepare for Tuesday’s fourth round Open Cup showdown against the Portland Timbers.

The U23s went down early, though, after a deep free-kick into the box drew Lions’ Goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui off his line. Mikey Lightbourn’s searching ball went just over Uzcategui’s attempt to punch it away, landing to Defender Tyler Botte who nodded the cross into the back of the net to give Panama an early 1-0 lead.

Tyler Blackwood nearly created an equalizer in the 16th minute, after getting in behind the defense, but Nico Rittmeyer was unable to latch on to his ball across the six. The U23s had another prime opportunity to level the score-line in the 24th minute, after Tosan Popo was brought down in the box, but Panama ‘keeper Sean Lewis made a diving save to parry left-back Eirik Bjornoe’s ensuing attempt from the spot.

After struggling to maintain much possession in the opening 45, the Orlando City U23s were in complete control in the second half. As Panama struggled to leave its own defensive third, the Lions created multiple opportunities at Panama’s goal and looked destined to find the back of the net.

With numerous half-chances not going the Lions’ way, substitute Striker Romario Williams eventually provided the finishing touch for the U23s in the 81st minute. Williams was left unmarked in the box and did well to finish Blackwood’s accurate header, displaying an effective partnership between the twin strikers.

City’s next league match will take place on June 20th against the Ocala Stampede. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Trinity High School.
