Brandon, Fla.
– The Orlando City U23s battled hard in Brandon, Fla., against the VSI Tampa Flames last night to earn a 0-0 draw, taking an ever-important point on the road. With the tie, Orlando maintains pace with the other teams atop the Southeast Division, which has its top three clubs separated only by one point with four weeks left in the PDL regular season.

“The team played hard for 90 minutes,” said Orlando City U23s Head Coach Joe Avallone. “We just needed a bit more quality and imagination in the final third [to win the match].”

The game proved to be a back-and-forth defensive affair, with chances few and far in between for both clubs. Both teams combined for only eight shots on the night, with Orlando holding the slight advantage of five to three. Orlando’s greatest chances came off of corners, but the Lions weren’t able to convert the 11 they had as Tampa was able to effectively clear each chance.

Late in the match, Orlando City U23s (4-1-4, 16 points) Goalkeeper Brendan Moore made a diving safe after Tampa (4-3-1, 13 points) attempted a free kick near the Lions goal to keep the shutout intact. Orlando Midfielder Anthony Arico was called for unsporting behavior outside the 18 yard box in the 76th minute, giving the Flames an opportunity only for the UNC Chapel Hill goalkeeper to deny the shot. The shutout was Moore’s third of the season and second in a row.

The Orlando City U23s travel to The Villages Polo Club in Ocala, Fla., on Wednesday, June 20, in an important southeast matchup against the Ocala Stampede. The last time the two teams met, the Stampede scored three goals in the second half to win the match 4-2 and even the season series at one win a piece.

This will be the last time the two teams meet for the rest of the regular season. A win will be vital for the U23s to earn an advantage in the series in case of a tiebreaker at the end of the season. For more information on the Ocala match next week and more, visit orlandocitysoccer.com
