Great West League Announces New Collegiate Summer Baseball Team in Lincoln
LINCOLN, Calif.,– The Great West League (GWL) introduced a new collegiate summer baseball team, the Lincoln Potters, at a press conference today at the team’s future home field, McBean Stadium. The team will play their first season next summer.
“McBean Stadium is a local treasure and we are thrilled GWL is fielding a team in Lincoln,” said Lincoln Mayor Spencer Short. “Baseball will bring expanded activity and vitality to Downtown Lincoln,” he continued.
The Mayor, along with other city and county officials, joined the Lincoln Potters’ leadership team and the president of GWL to unveil the team’s logo and jerseys to a crowd of local leaders, residents and media. This announcement comes after months of renovations and upgrades to McBean Stadium where William Jessup University Baseball plays during the school year.
“We are proud to be part of the revitalization to make McBean Stadium a premier baseball facility again,” said Placer Valley Tourism’s CEO, David Attaway. “Indeed a gem for the entire region. The addition of the Lincoln Potters brings even more excitement and prestige to our area. Joining William Jessup making McBean their home creates an amazing line up.”
The GWL is a college summer wood-bat league, with teams in Oregon and California, including the Chico Heat, Medford Rogues, Marysville Gold Sox and the Portland Pickles
“We’re thrilled to add such a dynamic market to our growing league,” announced GWL President, Ken Wilson. “We're looking forward to bringing affordable family fun to the area.”
Matt Lundgren is the team’s general manager.
"I'm very excited to be involved in bringing baseball back to the city of Lincoln,” Lundgren said. “The support we are already receiving from the community has been tremendous and I'm looking forward to restoring the tradition of the Potters."
The City of Lincoln, once the fastest growing small town in America, has a long history of baseball prestige. Co-Owner Bill Stewart adds, “Baseball teams in Lincoln have long been called ‘The Potters.’ The name originates from Gladding, McBean & Company, which has made pottery products in Lincoln for over 150 years.” Clifton Taylor is the team’s other Co-Owner.
“My wife, Isabel, and I are very excited to help bring Potters baseball back to McBean Stadium in Lincoln,” Taylor said. “We both have a deep appreciation for Lincoln, especially the Downtown area, and are proud to be part of the investment the leaders are making in the community.”
Wayne Sisneroz from the Downtown Lincoln Association agrees that the team will bring even more action to an already vibrant area.
"We are excited to see the Lincoln Potters coming to McBean Stadium in Downtown Lincoln,” Sisneroz said. “The Potters will bring an enthusiastic crowd that will see some great baseball and also be able to "Discover the Charm" of our fantastic downtown shops and restaurants. Go Potters!”
Each team will play 54 league games during the upcoming 2017 season and will add additional home games with teams outside the Great West League. At the conclusion of the regular season, the teams finishing first and second will meet in a best-of-three Championship Series for the GWL title. The schedule will be released over the next few days.
