Potters Win League Opener

By Jordan Georgeson

The Lincoln Potters hit the road on Tuesday to open CCL play with a 3-2 win against the Walnut Creek Crawdads. The Crawdads jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Hayden Schmitt. Lincoln knotted the game up in the top of the fourth when Trey Furrey scored on a passed ball. Walnut Creek regained the lead shortly after with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the same inning. The Potters tied it back up in the fifth when Trace Willhoite brought a runner home. Trey Furrey brought home the winning run on an RBI double in the eighth to pull ahead 3-2. With this win the Potters improve to 9-2 on the season and are 1-0 in CCL play.

The Potters only totaled six hits in the contest but they made the most of their opportunities, with four of the team’s six hits being doubles. Trace Willhoite added his sixteenth RBI of the season, and Trey Furrey brought in the winning run on his fifth RBI of the year. Newcomer Drew Stahl got his first hit as a Potter with a single in the fifth inning. Jason Brandow, Trey Furrey, CJ Valdez, and Kade Turnage all hit doubles in the game.

Lincoln’s pitching once again dominated the game. Starter Carson Kohls went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits, and striking out five. Marlin Brucato entered the game in the fifth and pitched three innings, retiring nine batters in a row. Brucato didn’t allow a single walk, hit or run in his appearance. Brandon Gomez took over for Brucato in the eight and picked up right where he left off, striking out three and not allowing any runs or hits. The Crawdads threatened with a runner in scoring position in the final inning, but Logan Bell entered the game in the ninth and close the door on their comeback attempt.

The Potters are back in action for more CCL play tomorrow nights as they welcome the Healdsburg Prune Packers to McBean for their CCL home opener. Watch the Potters live on Facebook and listen on Potters Radio via the mixlr app. Also follow along on twitter @LincolnPotters to get live updates!
